secretly uses Lora to assist in his plot Chaos Bound by Rebekah Turner, having greatly benefited from the amazing world building of its predecessor, Chaos Born,, delves further into Lora, her world and her life This time, Lora is muchlikable, has a much deeper, well rounded personality with a little less prickle to her tongue Gideon seems a little quirkier, less self possessed and Seth and Roman, as part of the almost love triangle become major players filled with surprises for Lora.Although still dark in flavor, Chaos Bound has some smoother edges and a better flow through each bend series Chaos Born as this book really sets up the world that Turner has created as well as where Lora Blackgoat fits into it It is a good read for those who want something a little different in the Urban Fantasy genre as it has a elements of fantasy and steampunkness to it.Rebekah Turner is back with a whole new Lady Lora Blackgoat adventure, and this time Lora is being attacked on all fronts that she doesn t know who she can trust and rely on Lady Lora Blackgoat is a well known mercenary and smuggler, though lately most of the jobs had dried up as the partners that she has worked with tend to die and well other people seem to as well she didn t earn the new nickname White Death for nothing previously known as Chopper When a job has her watching one of the top mobster s daughter should be an easy gig and the only one she seems to be able to get but when there is an attempt on her life, Lora s world is about to spin out of control She is being attacked on all angles by both friends and foe To top everything off there is something sinister happening in The Weald, where people are going missing and a new deadly drug has appeared When Lora s sometime partner Crowhurst s friend goes missing Lora is about to encounter the most violent gang in The Weald and their love of blood. This was a great follow up to the first book and I personally liked this book better than the first I think with the first one we are just getting to know Lora and understand the world she lives in, that at times the plot suffered a bit and there were quite a few slow parts However, the world building in the first book was really well done, and needed to done in order to understand the novel at all This allows for the second book to be plot and story driven with Lora s missions and assignments being front and center This means that means this one was faster paced, interesting and made me want to readandAlthough some of the ideas within the plot I have read in other book, Turner is really able to put her own spin on them especially as the events take place in The Weald, which makes them still very interesting, entertaining and great to read.Lora is a great main character, while I think she may be a bit guy crazy I appreciate that Turner does not have pages and pages of romance or sex scenes , I liked that in this book she is realizing that maybe some guys are not good for her, even those that she has known for a long time Dare I say it, she may be growing up Lora may disagree with me though I love Lora s grit, determination, persistence and loyalty, all of which are tested within this novel Lora also acts as her own comic relief in the book for some of the situations that she seems to get herself in as well as the jokes that she makes, which often occur at inappropriate times We do not get to see any new additional powers that Lora may gain thethat she learns about herself, but Lora as a character in general really grows in this book.I do not think that the secondary characters have been developed enough yet As the book is told from Lora s point of view which I totally support there are certain aspects about all of the secondary characters that we lack information on I think that Turner will eventually flesh these out thebooks that she has in this series, as in this book we were able to learnabout Seth and Crowhurst so I think that this will be a trend from book to book. This was a great follow up novel and it seems theI read by Turner theI enjoy her world and characters I m a big fan of Lora and while this book does not really leave you with a cliff hanger there are so many unanswered questions about Lora that I will be sure to pick up the third book.Enjoy Originally published at Reading RealityThe Chronicles from the Applecross is a away, and is also excellent If you enjoy multi faceted urban fantasy starring complicated kick ass female protagonists, get a copy of Chaos Born right now Lora Blackgoat is a whole world of fascinating.Chaos Bound picks up right where Chaos Born left off Lora Blackgoat is a mercenary and an all purpose fixer for the Blackgoat Guild in the magical borderland called the Weald From there, it is possible to cross into our own non magical world, the Outlands and bring back luxury goods Lora is particularly fond of sports bras and expensive boots. She also has the unique ability to make mechanical items function in the Weald, and make magic spells work in the Outlands Lora doesn t know why, but then, Lora doesn t know her own heritage, either She was a foundling, adopted and raised by the satyr Gideon Blackgoat and the otherkin Orella Warbreeder, but she s never known what she herself is She looks human, but knows she probably isn t.She also looks like a Witch Hunter, but doesn t have the talents that go with that appearance Lora also detests the practices of the Witch Hunter Guild They have a tendency to massacre suspected dark path practitioners first, and ask questions later, if it all.In Chaos Bound, Lora finds herself trapped between multiple sets of opposing forces A competing mercenary company tries to muscle Gideon out of business This sounds like simple business competition, but it sparks a blood soaked chain reaction that nearly leads to a purge of all magic practitioners.Lora is contracted to bodyguard a young actress, and the consequences of her assignment start a blood feud between the shapechanging griorwolves and a drugrunning gang of cuthroats and slavers. In the middle of all of this, Lora discovers that the reason she has such unusual magical abilities is that she is something that has not been seen in millenia, if ever she is a female nephilim And that too many people using loose definitions for the word people want to control her power for their own ends Not that she is remotely willing to let them.Unfortunately, one of those people is her ex lover Who neglected to mention his own past as ex hellspawn Or that he is in the center of several of the recent power plays, trying to decide which one will benefit him the most. The Applecross is a very complicated, and deadly place It is awesome to read about, but I wouldn t want to live there.Escape Rating B Chaos Bound and also Chaos Born are totally Lora s show Both books are told from Lora s first person perspective, and it s her voice all the way In other books this device falls flat, because the head you re stuck in has to be an interesting head, and the perspective has to be informed enough that it doesn t feel naive or stupid.Lora is completely awesomesauce Even when she doesn t know what she s doing, she s still kicking ass and taking names.Yes, she has low moments, and sad moments, and times when she gets overwhelmed, but she picks herself back up She doesn t wait to be rescued She also goes off in the complete wrong direction a few times, but she keeps moving forward Or occasionally ass backward But moving. This is urban fantasy rather than paranormal romance However, there is what feels like an obligatory romantic triangle in here, and I kind of wish it had been played down eventhan it was It feels like there s going to be a showdown at some point, but I wish that the romance wasn t tied into it Or that the triangular aspects of the romance weren t tied into it Not every urban fantasy needs a romantic triangle There isthan enough tension building in Lora s life without one. But, about the two gentlemen and their history, outside the nascent romance Seth Hallow is ex hellspawn, and he seems to have been in the Applecross and the Outlands since he got his ejection notice, a looooong time ago Lora and this reader would love to know how many fingers he s had in how many pies since the dawn of time He s been a busy boy.Her other suitor is the nephilim, Roman He s probably been around a few decades, or maybe centuries, too There s serious history waiting to be explored. But the story is all about Lora Where did she come from It sthan obvious that Gideon and Orella are keeping secrets about her origins So is Seth Every time Lora finds out , it s because one of those secrets has just bitten her in the ass.I would love to know why the cover picture is the guy in torment The Chronicles of the Applecross are absolutely Lora s story from beginning to end And it s one hell of an absorbing story I hope we get somesoon, because while this installment came to a definite conclusion, Lora s journey is far from over I really love Rebekah Turner s sense of humour, which in turn means I enjoy Lora s quips and comebacks I simply enjoyed the experience of reading about Lora and her friends I also liked that, while there is a little romance, it takes a major backseat, letting the adventure and Lora s frustrations take the spotlight I ll admit that I didn t love Chaos Bound quite as much as Chaos Born, but that s often the case with sequels Lora just seemed to haveirons in the fire here and it left me f I really love case with sequels Lora just seemed to haveirons in the fire here and it left me feeling a little distracted, because nothing got much attention before skipping off to something else This makes for a fast paced novel, but little in depth exploration of any single theme However, it did all tie together in the end I also thought that we weren t given enough interaction with Roman, considering how important his character was to Lora I suppose I could say the same for Seth This is, of course, just personal opinion though As I said, I generally really enjoyed the book The writing and editing was good Like book one, there were a number of missing words Part of me wonders if some of this is because the author is Australian I have a friend, for example, who always says I I went to hospital instead of I went to the hospital This is a linguistic difference between where she grew up and were I grew up Neither is necessarily wrong So, hard to be certain, but I felt like there were the occasional missing words Also like book one, the world building is still a little weak It s an interesting world, for sure, but it s unclear how it relates to the real world and I would really like to knowabout this While the book isn t a precipitous cliffhanger, as is so common these days, it isn t a stand alone book either Lora faces a couple challenges in this book and she deals with them But there are a number of open threads left, so the reader is still left wanting at the end I suppose what I m saying is that the books in this series are each an episodes in a larger story, as opposed to their own, individual, self contained stories Don t go in expecting to finish with all the answers This isn t a criticism, just a comment on the type of series it is All in all, I will definitely be looking for the next book in the series and any new works by Ms Turner Chaos Bound.Chronicles from the Applecross 2 Rebekah TurnerReview from Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews I struggled a bit with book things about her heritage she never envisaged, and its putting her into danger Well, danger is part of her everyday life as a Runner, but evenso now that people may want her or her blood for the power Roman and Seth are still around, Seth is a past lover and wantsand though Lora would have loved that at one time she s seen another side to him now and then there s Roman Nephilm who thinks he s her soul mate that s a relationship forbidden though by the Grigori masters who control the Nephilm, so they have to be very careful Then she s tasked with what seems like a simple job of finding a missing person and of course its never as simple as it seems, and Lora gets drawn into life threatening danger once again Its again a novel of non stop action, every word counts, every tiny bit of each plot adds something to the overall one, and Lora is struggling to put all the pieces together and keep herself alive It seems everyone wants her for something, and most of them aren t too bothered whether she s alive Its a climatic ending, with her getting involved in a blood sports game where she s the prey And all the while trying to protect her family and help those she loves I really felt I d got to grips with the world of Applecross in this book, found it easier to work out the layers of hierarchy and where the varies people fit I m looking forward toI want to know what happens with them all next, and if Lora goes forward with Roman and how she can do that or if she goes back to Seth Priced at 3.11 5.01 for 241 pages its one with enough detail to bear multiple re as potential lovers Work should be a refuge, but a job finding missing persons puts her in the crosshairs of a violent gang and a merchant with a taste for blood sport Reluctantly, Lora turns to the two men in her life for help Roman the nephilim professes to be her soul mate and turns to her when he feels the darkness of nephilim madness descending But though Lora is drawn to Roman, it is Seth, ex lover and reborn hellspawn, who Lora must ultimately ask to protect those she loves Can she trust Seth to save Roman and her adoptive family, or will this be a fatal mistake For those who don t know but I really enjoyed Chaos Born, the first book in this series and it was definitely followed by a solid second book I was completely sucked into The Weald all over again There is action galore, danger at every turn and frustration at times as well But as usual, Lora, the unlikely heroine, stumbles, fights, hexes and shoots her way through to the very end She follows her first instinct and reputation, but she manages to go to the next job without hesitation She wants to change her reputation and prove that she can do her job without complications She is running two cases a bodyguard job and a missing persons She soon realises that things are out of her hands and all hell breaks loose in Applecross.Lora was her stunning self, still has the limp but her heart is pulling in different directions She likes Roman but is unsure if she can trust Seth She has growing feelings for Roman as well and is not sure what to do about it She pushes it all aside to get her job done and will not sit back and let others do the dirty work I love how she is willing to throw herself into danger no matter the cost and does it constantly She always comes up with plans, which are not always good You can never fault her loyalty but you can count on Lora and her smart assed comments Rebekah Turner has a knack of sucking you into a fantasy world, with a dodgy heroine who captures your attention She
